The Four P's of Selecting a Tailgating Grill

!±8± The Four P's of Selecting a Tailgating Grill

If you plan to do much tailgating in the upcoming baseball season or next football season, getting the right tailgate grill is an important second step (after shelling out for tickets). There are a few simple guidelines to consider while searching for the right grill.

Portability - absolutely key to choosing the right grill. You don't want to deal with messing around with transportation, setting it up, taking it down, or storage. There are plenty of great grills that take all of the pain out of that. Go with a grill that folds up neatly and can be secured in your trunk or back of your truck. You will even find tailgate grills such as the Margaritaville Tailgating Grill that are designed to attach to a tailgate hitch.

Propane, Charcoal, or Electric - you've got a few different heat source options. Most of the better portable grills you'll find run on propane. Many of the better grills give you the option of the smaller propane cylinder or 20-pound tank, depending on how often you use it. Probably a good idea here to start out with the cylinder and test it out from there.

Pure Size - ok, had to shoehorn this one in there. Size does matter. Consider how many fellow tailgaters you expect to be grilling for and look for a portable grill that can accommodate your needs. You don't want to be hunched over a tiny grill trying to feed 20 of your favorite fans. Do the math.

Plate Heat Consistency - some lower-end grills don't offer good heat consistency and may burn hotter on the outside than they do on the inside. You aren't looking to get out to the parking lot and feed your buddies with an unnecessarily high degree of difficulty. Do the smart thing and invest in a grill that offers good heat distribution. For this one, you will want to check grill ratings and user reviews to better understand what other customers have experienced.

Everyone will have their personal preferences on what the best tailgate grill can offer, but follow these simple guidelines and you'll find the right grill for you.

Organising a Summer Party - Barbecue Grill Tips

!±8± Organising a Summer Party - Barbecue Grill Tips

Whether you are organising a summer party for the office or planning an outdoors event, you could be one of the thousands of people who opts to hire a barbecue grill for the day. If, however, your budget does not extend to hiring a professional barbecue chef to operate the grill, here are five quick tips on getting the best from your grill and ensuring you get the best possible culinary results.

1. Think safety
The typical modern barbecue for commercial events is gas-fired and the cylinders are a potential hazard. Be sure to check them visually for any signs of damage, ensure they are safely secured in an upright position during use, and don't attempt to refill them yourself without adequate safety protection from overalls, goggles and gloves.

2. Charcoal or gas?
Whether to use a charcoal or a gas grill is both a matter of taste and one of practical necessity. Charcoal grills take longer to prepare as you have to fire up the coals and wait before you have adequate heat, whereas with a gas grill you simply flick a switch and off you go. But for the afficionado, charcoal gives the meat flavour which a gas grill simply cannot reproduce. The choice is yours.

3. Direct versus indirect heat
For burgers, kebabs, pork chops are anything less than about two inches thickness, you can bbq your meat directly over the hottest part of the grill. But for bigger cuts of meat, steaks and the like, position the food at the edges where the indirect heat will cook them more slowly. Putting steaks or cuts of chicken on direct heat is likely to result in charred exteriors and insufficiently cooked interiors - a big no no at any company bbq!

4. Add smoke for flavour
The smoky taste of a barbecue is perhaps the best part and it's possible to add smoke even on a gas grill. The trick is simple - use wood chips. With a charcoal grill, add the woodchips directly to the coals once the initial flames have receded. For gas, never put the wood chips directly on the flames. Instead, wrap them in aluminium foil pierced to let the smoke out.

5. To douse or not to douse
Many a bbq'er swears by the addition of a soaking of beer to the grill when things are hotting up. Indeed, beer is a perfect way to douse the flames if the fat ignites and will not negatively affect the taste of the meat. However, do not overdo it and use just small gushes of beer so as not to overcool your grill. Most important - happy eating!

How to Safely Operate a Gas Grill - Check the Cylinders

!±8± How to Safely Operate a Gas Grill - Check the Cylinders

1. Visually check the cylinders
Before using any gas cylinder, be certain to inspect the units thoroughly to ascertain whether there is any damage. Things to look out for include dents, evidence of fire damage (e.g. scorch marks) or bulges. Also check the cylinder attachments (e.g. valves and regulators) for any signs of damage and if in any doubt about a cylinder, do not use it.

2. Check its safety history
It is required by law that all gas cylinders are manufactured to an appropriate standard and also checked by an inspector before they are sold. Before attaching a gas cylinder, quickly check to ensure it is displaying the stamp or mark of the relevant inspection authority and has been cleared for service.

3. Re-filling a cylinder
Anyone filling a gas cylinder needs to wear appropriate protective clothing, which may include overalls, ear and eye defenders, gloves and safety shoes.

4. Handling and use
Always use cylinders in an upright position. They should be standing vertically and never laid on end while in use. Ensure that the cylinders are securely fastened and can not be toppled over, and double check that that the cylinder and gas in use is the right one for the barbecue grill you are using.

5. Transport and storage
Disconnect hoses from the cylinders whenever they are not in use. When in transit, secure cylinders to prevent them from rolling around and fit suitable protective valve caps and covers to cylinders to ensure they are kept free of dust and dirt. Remember: gas cylinders have explosive destructive potential. Always take adequate precautions and ensure they are used safely.

Four Top Rated Portable Barbecue Grills

!±8± Four Top Rated Portable Barbecue Grills

One of the advantages of having a portable barbecue grill is that you can take it camping or tailgating. This portability allows you to cook from any place you can transport your grill. A few of the top BBQ grills are reviewed below, along with a short summary of their benefits. Both propane grills and charcoal grills are included.

The first one is the Weber Q220. This is the ideal portable BBQ grill. It's halfway between the small Weber Q120 and Weber's Q320 in terms of both size and cost. The Weber Q220 has a huge cooking surface of two hundred and eighty inches squared, which is space to grill fifteen hamburgers or a few hefty New York strip steaks. It has the weight of 36 pounds and is engineered to be easily moved around. In terms of how much you will pay, it's midrange, usually selling in the range of two hundred dollars. This piece has a built-in temperature gauge, and it has an easy-ignition button.

Another grill is the Coleman Road Trip grill. This grill is comparable to the Weber grill mentioned above, and it also has an ingeniously engineered built-in folding leg stand. Additionally, the Coleman produces more power due to its powerful dual 10,000 BTU burners. The Coleman has authentic grilling with an open flame, and the burner is covered in order to prevent flares. Even though it has an attached stand, this grill folds up surprisingly easily. It's got 285 square inches of cooking space so it can still cook for a whole party. The Coleman also has side tables along with push-button electronic ignition. If you'd like a stand for more portability, this is a good option. The Coleman even has a modular grilling surface.

A third option is the Blue Rhino GBT1030 portable propane grill. The most noteworthy difference with the Rhino is that it's very small and light. It's designed to fold up easily and has a locking top, which makes it safe to move. Weighing only 14 pounds, it's very easy to lift, but the trade off is you can only cook for a couple of people at a time. It has a hundred and twenty square inches of room, which accommodates about four burgers plus a few veggies. There are a couple of powerful burners. They are controlled by two different knobs, so you only have to cook from the desired area. One of the surfaces is covered by a griddle for cooking food like eggs and bacon, while the other half is a normal grilling surface. The griddle can be taken off to expand the area for grilling meat. One thing to note about the Rhino grill is that it requires initial assembly, which can take up to two hours.

Our final grill is the Go Anywhere by Weber. If you like to grill with charcoal, the Weber Go Anywhere is the one to choose. This grill is very cheap, usually retailing for about half a bill. Besides using charcoal, a big attraction of the Go Anywhere grill is that it's extremely light - it weighs less than 20 pounds. It has 160 square inches of cooking space, so it's on the smaller side. There's still plenty of space to cook for six people. Although it's supposed to be a travel grill, the Go-Anywhere can still be used as a home grill. Like all products from this company, it cooks evenly and doesn't flare up. It can take a lot of abuse - some people are still using their Weber Go-Anywhere five years after purchase. This same grill also comes in a gas model, the Weber 1520, for another ten dollars.
